HYBE has successfully identified the individuals behind YouTube channels that have maliciously defamed their artists and will resume a lawsuit for 280 million won in damages ($212K). This follows the acquisition of identity information through the disclosure of evidence in a U.S. court. However, it appears that only one defendant among multiple suspects has been identified.
According to the Seoul Western District Court, on February 20th, HYBE submitted a request to correct the party information and identified Defendant 1. Earlier, on August 30th last year, HYBE, Belift Lab, and Source Music filed a civil lawsuit seeking 280 million won in damages. The lawsuit was based on claims that seven YouTube channels defamed the artists under their labels.
According to the lawsuit, the names of the channels are ‘Cute Rabbit Jjang’, ‘EnterPick’, ‘People Box’, ‘Da Issue’, ‘NewJeansFam’, ‘Issue Tan’, and ‘Wangjam Issue’. These channels made false claims that ILLIT, a K-Pop group under Belift Lab, plagiarized content from other artists, and spread rumors about the members of LE SSERAFIM, under Source Music, having poor skills.
Regarding the ongoing damages lawsuit, HYBE, Belift Lab, Source Music, and others filed a request with the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on September 9th last year, asking the court to grant a discovery order for Google LLC under Federal Law §1782 to collect evidence for use in foreign legal procedures. On November 27th, Judge Donna M. Ryu approved the issuance of a subpoena.
Based on this, HYBE submitted a reply regarding the factual inquiry to the Seoul Western District Court on December 10th last year and identified Defendant 1 on February 20th. The identified Defendant 1 is listed as ‘주OOOOOOOO 대OOOOOOOOOOO’, suggesting that it is a corporation. It is highly speculated that this could be a corporate entity operating in cyber defamation, focusing on creating negative issues to generate profits.
HYBE has refrained from commenting on the ongoing case, saying, "It is difficult to comment on the current ongoing case
