NewJeans was the face of 4th gen girl groups now frozen amid legal dispute

NewJeans was once the representative group of the 4th generation of K-pop girl groups. Since their debut in July 2022, every release, including “Attention,” “Ditto,” “Super Shy,” and “ETA”, was a major hit, solidifying their status as a top-tier, unrivaled girl group.

However, their music has been on pause for over a year now due to an unresolved dispute with their agency, ADOR. According to legal circles, the court’s injunction banning all five members of NewJeans from pursuing independent activities has recently been finalized. As a result, NewJeans members are now prohibited from engaging in entertainment or advertisement activities on their own or through third parties without prior approval and consent from their agency.

ADOR stated, “As NewJeans approaches its third debut anniversary next month, we plan to provide full support to help them achieve greater growth and take a big leap forward. We hope they return and resume activities soon.”

△ A shift in the girl group landscape

Amid NewJeans’ hiatus, other girl groups are actively stepping in to fill the gap. Notable names include Hearts2Hearts (SM Entertainment), KiiiKiii (Starship), and Baby DONT Cry (PNation).

KiiiKiii took first place on a music show just 13 days after their debut with their song “I Do Me.” Hearts2Hearts was appointed as promotional ambassadors for the Seoul Metropolitan Government and recently released their new song “Style,” officially launching their promotions.

Mixed-gender group Allday Project, which includes Annie (real name Moon Seoyoon), the eldest daughter of Shinsegae chairwoman Chung Yoo-kyung, also garnered attention by entering the top ranks of music charts immediately upon debut on the 23rd.


JYP’s girl group NiziU recently wrapped up their first solo concert in Hong Kong to great success.

Meanwhile, girl group H1-KEY joined the summer comeback rush with their new mini album “Lovestruck,” released on the 26th.

The advertising industry is also shifting. Recently, Apple filmed aespa’s performance video “Dirty Work” using an iPhone, echoing the method previously used by NewJeans in their “ETA” music video.

Oh Haewon of NMIXX shot a Coca-Cola commercial, the same brand NewJeans had modeled for.

Stray Kids have taken over the role of global models for Pepero, a position NewJeans held for two consecutive years.

Meanwhile, Shinhan Bank officially ended its model contract with NewJeans in December of last year.
