Girl group ILLIT and its agency have strongly denied claims by Min Heejin, former CEO of ADOR, the label behind NewJeans, that ILLIT copied NewJeans.
On July 18, the 12th Civil Division of the Seoul Western District Court held the third hearing in a ₩2.5 billion (approx. $1.8 million) damage compensation lawsuit filed by HYBE Labels against Min Heejin.

ILLIT’s legal team also introduced what they sarcastically called the ‘Min Heejin Creator of Everything Theory’, criticizing her for acting as if she singlehandedly invented every creative concept. They pointed out that the three choreography moves Min cited as examples of copying have long existed in K-pop before and after NewJeans.
For example:
- The “hair whip” move from NewJeans’ debut choreography can be seen in performances by Hearts2Hearts, Chungha, KISS OF LIFE, aespa, ITZY, and IVE.
- The arm-rolling move in “Ditto” appears in routines by KISS OF LIFE, aespa, BTS, G-Dragon, and BLACKPINK’s Jennie.
- The sitting pose from “Hype Boy” can also be found in choreography by ITZY and Hyolyn.
They argued: “NewJeans cannot claim exclusive rights to these moves. Claiming even sitting formations are copied is unreasonable, as such formations are common in idol choreography. Accepting such a broad interpretation of plagiarism would stifle fair creative expression and competition and negatively impact the industry.”
Previously, at a press conference in April 2024, Min Heejin publicly exposed internal conflicts with HYBE executives including Chairman Bang Sihyuk, accusing HYBE of delaying NewJeans' debut to prioritize LE SSERAFIM and forbidding NewJeans' promotion prior to LE SSERAFIM’s launch. She also loudly claimed that ILLIT copied NewJeans’ concept.
In response:
- LE SSERAFIM's agency, Source Music, filed a ₩500 million (approx. $360,000) defamation lawsuit against Min for damaging their reputation.
- ILLIT's agency, Belift Lab, filed a ₩2 billion (approx. $1.45 million) lawsuit claiming Min’s accusations harmed their girl group’s public image.
