President Lee Jae-myung will stand alongside citizens who participated in the “Revolution of Light,” which was sparked by the December 3rd martial law crisis, during a public inauguration ceremony at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul on the 15th, replacing a traditional inauguration. Former President Moon Jae-in and his wife, as well as heads of the top 10 conglomerates, will also attend.
On the 14th, Presidential Office spokesperson Kang Yu-jung held a briefing and explained the purpose of the ceremony, saying:
“This event commemorates the birth of a people’s sovereign government that overcame illegal martial law and insurrection. It is a moment where the citizens, protagonists and sovereigns of K-democracy, directly appoint the president as a public servant.”
The event will begin with 80 citizen representatives placing appointment certificates into a large cube on the circular stage at Gwanghwamun Square. President Lee and First Lady Kim Hye-kyung will join four of the citizen representatives in placing the certificates.
The four selected citizen representatives include:
- Mok Jang-gyun, born on August 15, 1945 (Korea’s Liberation Day)
- Lee Guk-jong, director of the Daejeon Armed Forces Hospital
- Lee Yeon-soo, CEO of NC AI
- Heo Ga-young, director and the first Korean winner of the student section at the Cannes Film Festival
In addition to the citizen representatives, over 3,000 members of the public have been invited. Former President Moon Jae-in and his wife, as well as the family of the late President Roh Moo-hyun, will also be in attendance.
From the business world, leaders of the top 10 conglomerates have been invited. These include:
- Lee Jae-yong (Chairman, Samsung Electronics)
- Chey Tae-won (SK)
- Chung Eui-sun (Hyundai Motor)
- Koo Kwang-mo (LG)
- Shin Dong-bin (Lotte)
- Kim Seung-youn (Hanwha)
- Chung Ki-sun, Senior Vice Chairman of HD Hyundai, has also been invited.
Others expected to attend include:
- Huh Tae-soo (GS)
- Chung Yong-jin (Shinsegae)
- Cho Won-tae (Hanjin)
- Park Jung-won (Doosan)
Also attending are:
- Park Dae-joon (CEO, Coupang)
- Bang Sihyuk (Chairman, HYBE)
- Tak Young-jun (CEO, SM Entertainment)
- Jin Ok-dong (Chairman, Shinhan Financial Group)
President Lee is also scheduled to host a dinner for foreign guests at the Blue House State Guest House.
Presidential spokesperson Kang Yu-jung stated,
"We’ve invited the entire diplomatic corps in Korea, including ambassadors from 117 resident embassies and representatives from 30 international organizations. About 170 people are expected to attend, including special envoys, members of the National Assembly’s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee, and ministers from relevant government departments.”
The dinner will also be attended by the heads of Korea's six major economic organizations. These include:
- Chey Tae-won, Chairman of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry
- Ryu Jin (Federation of Korean Industries)
- Kim Ki-moon (Korea Federation of SMEs)
- Son Kyung-shik (Korea Employers Federation)
- Yoon Jin-sik (Korea International Trade Association)
- Choi Jin-sik (Korea Federation of Middle Market Enterprises)
They are expected to dine with President Lee at the event.
Although the primary guests are members of the diplomatic corps, inviting the economic leaders signals the administration’s ongoing “pro-business” approach. President Lee previously invited the heads of Korea's top five conglomerates and the six major economic groups to the presidential office just nine days after taking office.
Ahead of upcoming trade negotiations with the U.S., he also met with business leaders such as Lee Jae-yong, Chung Eui-sun, Chey Tae-won, Koo Kwang-mo, and Kim Dong-kwan (Vice Chairman of Hanwha Group).
This latest event is seen as another move to engage with the business sector ahead of upcoming summits with the US and Japan. There is growing anticipation that stronger ties between Korea’s business community and diplomatic corps will help navigate intensifying global trade disputes.
