[PC stories/KPOP takes] K-POP IS GOING TO CANNIBALIZE ITSELF

I came across a tweet of dives complaining about the lack of care & planning towards IVE’s cb compared to their co-groups. Their latest boy group’s (IDID) debut physical album is a plushie keyring, similar to NCT Wish’s WICHU. KiiiKiii is a direct copy of NewJeans from the promo, rollout, styling etc. And then I started looking at newly debuted 5th gen groups like IDNTT, who are the tripleS boy version. The group teasers were yet again a rehashed, tired version of boynextdoor and riize. Both of the latter groups are references to BlockB (zico), BTS and NCT. What happens when the reference becomes the source material? Everything starts to become stale and uninspired. The music is barely even good, we haven’t had a lineup of breakout rookie groups since new-i-le. Most of the 5th gen girl groups are biting off of NewJeans nachos to the point where it’s diluting the original and making it look aged — it’s literally only been 3 years since newjeans debuted. I’m starting to get seriously fatigued by the lack of diverse concepts in K-pop and I genuinely feel like 5th gen is doomed to fall into oblivion. The fact that a fictional group is the most popular K-pop group rn shows how dire the situation is.
