Changes to the Initial 'Friends Tab' Screen

Starting next month, Kakao will transform the initial screen of KakaoTalk, the "Friends" tab, to resemble Instagram. Currently, it displays names in alphabetical order in a phonebook-style list, but going forward, it will shift to a format that shows various posts uploaded by registered friends. This marks a complete overhaul of KakaoTalk’s UI for the first time in 15 years, since the app's launch in 2010, which has maintained the phonebook format until now. Kakao is preparing this update in an effort to increase users’ time spent on KakaoTalk. Within the company, opinions are divided, some say it’s an “inevitable choice to improve profitability,” while others are concerned that “such a drastic UI change may cause inconvenience for users.”
