On the September 17th episode of the MBC variety show “I Live Alone”, Lee Jangwoo expressed frustration over not receiving drama offers, saying, “I’m not getting any roles.” However, after his appearance on the show showcasing his fuller figure, some viewers criticized his comments as “complaining from a place of privilege.” Others suggested it might be better for him to focus on variety shows rather than dramas for the time being. This also brought renewed attention to comments he made last month about casting.
On August 26th, Lee Jangwoo appeared on the YouTube channel “Jeong Jun-ha Haha” and shared the behind-the-scenes story of being cast in the drama “My Only One.” He revealed that after completing his military service at the age of 33, no dramas were offering him roles. In response, he sent a long message to writer Kim Sa-kyung, expressing his eagerness and readiness to work hard.
Writer Kim replied by telling him to wait a little. Eventually, after production of the drama was temporarily paused, Lee Jangwoo was confirmed for the cast. However, this process sparked controversy, with some accusing him of using “personal connections” to land the role. Since the casting was finalized late in production, there was speculation that another actor may have been replaced to make room for Lee.
Lee Jangwoo also stirred debate over his appearance while playing the role of Darren Wang in the drama. In an interview, he said, “The writer and director wanted me to lose weight, but I purposely didn't,” explaining that he wanted to maintain an appearance that fit the character. However, this statement led to further criticism from some online users, accusing him of using connections and lacking self-discipline. On the other hand, some netizens defended him, saying, “Gaining weight isn’t inherently wrong; the criticism is too harsh,” and “As long as he’s happy, that’s what matters.”
Due to this, many fans have expressed disappointment in Lee Jangwoo, who seems to be waiting for casting calls without showing clear signs of self-management for roles. Now, attention is focused on how he will appear in front of the camera going forward.
