[PC stories/Kpop takes] LET PEOPLE BE CUTE

I’ve been seeing some hate regarding the cute concept in the industry, with particular idols like Wonyoung and Rei and groups like NCT Wish. First of all, you chose to be part of K-pop where aegyo culture is still very much a thing, it may not be as prominent as before but relevant when it comes to attracting fans. It even helped some idols reach stardom like Park Jihoon who was once known as the ‘wink’ boy in Produce or Hyeri who went viral in the military show ‘Real Men’ and look at them now, both have matured and have also started acting in more serious roles. I’m not saying all groups need to do it but as the debut age for idols keeps getting younger and younger, I’m not surprised if companies chooses to start with the youthful, cute concept in the beginning. This is both for the group concept e.g. songs, MVs etc. and an actual celebrity image. I still can’t forget that photo of Anton & Sakuya at SMTown where Sakuya looks like an actual kid, I think it’s a great representation of making use of one’s image to an advantage. However, this may seem contradictory, but I’m also not in support of forcing idols to act cute especially if they’re uncomfortable, an example of this would be when KARA’s Jiyoung appeared on Radio Star and the MCs kept pestering to do aegyo when she didn’t want to. Obviously, there’s two sides to it and honestly, if you’re not a fan of it or find it cringe, with every type of content, you can easily choose to ignore it. I’m not even the biggest fan of it but I understand why it’s there and why it works in this particular industry.

Side note: I also find it quite weird when some users on this site casually throw out the word ‘p*do’ in the comments, particularly as a form of trolling or hate to an idol when it’s very much a serious issue / topic on its own.
