[theqoo] [EXCLUSIVE] JUN JIHYUN "ANTI-CHINA" CONTROVERSY... ALL CHINESE ADS CANCELED ON THE 25TH

A single line from actress Jun Jihyun’s recent drama has stirred up a major controversy.

Jun Jihyun is currently facing backlash in China over a line from her new drama Polaris, which has been criticized for being "anti-China." As a result, she is effectively being dropped from the Chinese advertising scene.

According to entertainment industry sources on the 23rd, a Chinese clothing brand had planned to shoot a commercial with Jun Jihyun in Seoul on the 25th. However, as the controversy escalated uncontrollably, the shoot was entirely canceled.

The controversy began with a scene in Polaris where Jun Jihyun’s character says, “Why does China favor war? A nuclear bomb could fall on the border region.” Chinese netizens reacted angrily, accusing her of “insulting China.”

An industry insider stated, “The situation in China is far more serious than people in Korea might expect,” adding that, “The discontent among Chinese netizens has led to a boycott movement. As a result, some local ads featuring Jun Ji-hyun, including cosmetics and watch brands, have also been suspended.”
