[theqoo] [EXCLUSIVE] SOHYANG, DIVORCES AFTER 25 YEARS OF MARRIAGE... "AFTER WATCHING KDH'S RUMI, I DECIDED TO CONFESS"

Sohyang revealed in an exclusive interview with Edaily that she divorced her husband over two years ago, ahead of her upcoming concert.

Sohyang, who debuted in 1996, married her ex-husband in 1998, whom she had worked with in the CCM group POS. The couple did not have children. After 25 years of marriage, Sohyang ended her journey with her ex-husband in 2023.

She said she was in her early twenties at the time of marriage and reflected, "I was so young. Looking back, I don't know why we were in such a rush. We got married hastily, without really knowing each other."

She continued, "After we got married, we realized that our personalities and values didn’t align. But we endured it for a long time. Eventually, we came to the conclusion that it would be better to go our separate ways. After a long period of deep thought, we mutually agreed to part ways."

“‘K-pop Demon Hunters’ Gave Me the Courage to Open Up”

Although she had kept the divorce private for over two years, Sohyang shared that watching the Netflix animation K-pop Demon Hunters made her decide to finally speak out.

"It was a painful story, so it wasn’t easy to talk about. And time just flew by as I focused on music again and worked on my first full-length album since debut," she said. "Then one day, I saw the scene where Rumi, the main character of K-pop Demon Hunters, courageously reveals her hidden identity. I was so moved. At the same time, I felt ashamed of myself for continuing to hide the fact that I was divorced."

She added, "At that moment, I made a promise to myself that if the opportunity arose, I would no longer hide it. I would tell the truth. I wanted to be brave like Rumi."

“I’ll Continue to Take on Challenges and Bring Comfort Through Music”

Sohyang recently released a cover video of Golden, a song performed by the girl group HUNTRIX in the show, and it garnered over 2.4 million views on YouTube, becoming a hot topic.

"I got emotional while singing. As a singer who has suffered from vocal cord nodules and pneumonia, I could really relate to Rumi," she said. "I’m so grateful that the cover received such an enthusiastic response from so many people."

Sohyang addressed fans who may learn about her divorce through the article: "I want to tell them not to worry too much." She added, "I hope fans will support both me and my ex-husband as we move forward on our individual paths."

Last year, Sohyang signed an exclusive contract with KQ Entertainment, home to global idol group ATEEZ. Her relationship with ATEEZ members Hongjoong and Jongho, whom she appeared with on the KBS2 music variety show Immortal Songs, played a role in her decision to join the agency.

"I want to continue my career without fear of new challenges. If good opportunities arise, I’d love to be active overseas as well," she said. "Through my singing, I want to continue telling stories about dreams, love, and hope, and bring comfort to many."

In closing, Sohyang expressed her gratitude to fans: "The biggest reason I’m able to keep going is because of my fans." She said, "I’ll never forget the letter I received from an 18-year-old American fan that said, ‘You inspire me, please stay true to yourself and don’t waver.’ I’ll continue striving to give courage to even more people through my work."
