[theqoo] A FRENCH BOY WHO SURVIVED 2 YEARS ALONE AT THE AGE OF 9

A young boy in France, abandoned by his mother at the age of 9, lived alone for two years.
(His mother was living just 5 km away with another partner.)
He survived on cake and canned food, rarely using (or being able to use) electricity, heating, or hot water.
Despite these conditions, he went to school every day and was known as a “good student” by his teachers and classmates.

The incident occurred in the village of Nersac in the Charente region of southwestern France, where a 9-year-old boy lived alone from 2020 to 2022.

His mother had moved into a different apartment with her boyfriend, about 5 km away from her son. She visited only occasionally to drop off some food, maintaining minimal contact.

The boy’s home had no proper heating, electricity, or hot water. He survived by eating canned food, snacks, and items given by neighbors, even sneaking tomatoes from a neighbor’s balcony. To stay warm, he layered multiple blankets and endured the cold.

He continued attending school regularly, performed well academically, and showed no noticeable signs of distress, so teachers and school staff did not suspect anything unusual. (Remarkable.)

The mother has been convicted of child neglect and sentenced to 18 months in prison.

The boy is now under protective care and has reportedly been placed with a foster or adoptive family.

3. I got curious and looked into it, it seems the case took so long to be discovered because it happened during the pandemic. (Still, people are divided over how it went unnoticed for two whole years by neighbors and the school. Some are asking, “Why didn’t anyone report it?” Apparently, the mother told the neighbors not to worry about it…) The biological father was separated from the mother and apparently had no contact with the child. Also, it turns out the mother wasn’t living with a boyfriend, but with a girlfriend, looks like some reports mistranslated that part. She was initially sentenced to 18 months but ultimately received 6 months of house arrest. The child reportedly said he doesn’t want to see his mother again.
