On the 30th, attorney Ko Sang-rok, Kim Soohyun’s criminal defense lawyer, addressed the photo that had fueled rumors of an underage relationship.
Attorney Ko stated, “In the process of revealing the truth, there is always the possibility of unintentionally placing a burden on the parties involved, and that includes the late Kim Saeron. This case is particularly difficult for that reason.” He added, “The root of the issue was a draft statement with false claims left in a KakaoTalk conversation that the deceased sent to an acquaintance on March 25, 2024.”
He continued, “The photo of the deceased and the actor with their faces close together, which the deceased uploaded to social media and quickly deleted during the peak of the drama Queen of Tears, was confirmed to have been taken in late February 2020, when the deceased was in her second year of university.”
He went on to say, “However, in the draft statement, apparently prepared with someone’s assistance, it falsely claimed the photo was taken in 2016, when the deceased was a high school freshman. This is a significant and blatant falsehood. The photo was the sole piece of ‘evidence’ cited in the same document to support the false claim that the deceased had been in a relationship with the actor from her 9th-grade year (middle school) through her third year of college.”
In March 2024, while preparing for a comeback following her 2022 DUI incident, the late Kim Saeron uploaded a photo on social media showing her and Kim Soohyun with their cheeks touching, but deleted it within 3 minutes. This sparked dating rumors, to which Kim Soohyun’s agency responded at the time: “The rumors are completely false. We have no idea why Kim Saeron would take such an action.”
Attorney Ko added, “Anyone can make inaccurate statements under certain circumstances, and the deceased or those who supported her may have had motivations or reasons to do so. But not everyone does, and especially when such claims could cause serious harm to others, greater caution is required. Despite that, this false draft statement remained and became the starting point for a serious cybercrime. There is a reasonable explanation for this, based on what I’ve confirmed and reviewed as the attorney.” He also stated, “However, in revealing the truth, we are mindful that detailing specifics about the deceased could harm the public’s sentiment toward her memory. We ask for your understanding in not disclosing more.”
Attorney Ko emphasized, “Fake news is not just content, it’s a crime. Society as a whole must now confront and firmly suppress cyber mob behavior. This incident goes beyond a simple dispute and highlights the serious social harm and human rights issues involved. Therefore, we must not grow weary in the pursuit of truth. I ask the public to maintain interest and continue to support the actor until the damage he has suffered is fully addressed.”
