[theqoo] LISA WHO BEAT JISOO, JENNIE, ROSE... "SHE'S NOT EVEN KOREAN" VMA "BEST K-POP AWARD" CONTROVERSY

On the 7th (local time), immediately after the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs), an American popular music awards ceremony, there was an ‘incident’ that was perhaps more talked about among the global K-pop fandom than BLACKPINK member Rosé winning ‘Song of the Year’. That was that another BLACKPINK member, Lisa, won the ‘Best K-pop’ category for the third consecutive year.

While Rosé's won for Song of the Year for "APT.", which she sang with American pop star Bruno Mars, was celebrated by the entire K-pop fandom, there was a heated debate among fans over Lisa's nomination for "Best K-pop" for "Born Again," featuring American rapper Doja Cat and British singer-songwriter Ray.

X (formerly Twitter) posts announcing the award for "Born Again" were met with criticism that the song "wasn't worthy of an award." Netizens who made these comments left comments such as, "It's crazy to give a K-pop award to an English song sung by three non-Korean artists," and "I love Lisa so much, but she isn't K-pop."

In fact, Lisa's "Born Again," released in February, does not contain a single Korean lyric. While she achieved global popularity as a member of the K-pop group Blackpink, Lisa is Thai, making the song's three singers non-Korean.

Of course, there is room for debate over whether Rosé's "APT." is actually K-pop. While the song does include a Korean narration at the beginning, 99% of the lyrics are in English. Most of the lyricists and composers are foreigners. However, "APT." was released through a Korean agency, and Rosé is Korean (with dual citizenship in New Zealand), so it is still generally considered K-pop. BTS's "Dynamite" and other BTS members' solo tracks are similar examples.

In fact, Lisa's agency is also established in Korea. However, because it is a one-person agency created by Lisa as she began her solo career in earnest, it is not widely known to the public. Fans who are against "Born Again" winning the K-pop award cite the song's lack of significant promotional activity in Korea as another reason. They point out that while Lisa continues to promote as a member of BLACKPINK, she appears to be increasingly distancing herself from her K-pop identity as a solo artist.

This stands in contrast to the recent succession of K-pop idol groups with non-Korean members, who have one foot in the K-pop genre.

Critics of this award still include comments like, "'Best K-Pop,' but there are no Koreans. This is rac**m (against Koreans)." Conversely, there are also opposing opinions. One netizen stated, "Lisa is a member of Blackpink, a representative K-pop girl group, and other Korean K-pop singers also release music in English. This controversy is rooted in racism (against non-Korean K-pop singers)."

There's also criticism of the intention behind nominating "Born Again" for "Best K-Pop" at this year's VMAs. They criticized the organizers, saying it was "a ploy to induce voting competition" and "a paid awards ceremony."

Looking at the nominees for the "Best K-Pop" category other than "Born Again," all of the members of BLACKPINK were nominated, including Rosé's "Toxic Till the End," Jennie's "LIKE JENNIE," and Jisoo's "Earthquake." Other nominees include aespa's "Whiplash," BTS's Jimin's "WHO," and Stray Kids' "Chk Chk Boom." Some critics say that the organizers' nomination of Lisa, who has a strong global fan base, for the K-Pop award encouraged voting by fans of competing K-pop singers.

Meanwhile, after the VMAs held at the UBS Arena in New York, Lisa was unable to attend the awards ceremony and instead shared her acceptance speech with fans via video.

Lisa said, "I'm truly honored to receive this award. I'm grateful to Doja Cat and Ray for creating such special music with me, and I'm also grateful to my production team and agency family." She continued, "I couldn't have done this without my fans. I love you all so much," making a heart with her hands.

2. She is K-pop... But the other songs are more popular than her songs though?

3. Lisa IS a Korean singer though? What the?

4. It's not like they're a localized group, why are people bullsh*tting against BlackPink? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

5. It's the BTS I-roaches who made those claims and they're writing an article about this ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

6. I'm proud of Lisa, she's a K-pop singer

7. Wow ㅋ They're trying so f*cking hrad to make a fake controversy... Nobody is thinking this is controversial ㅋㅋㅋ seriously ㅋㅋㅋㅋ

8. She's K-pop

9. She's a member of a K-pop group, so she is K-pop. But my issue is more the song?? Is it even popular?? It's my first time hearing it

10. But I don't know any of the songs nominated aside from her either. I've never heard of BTS Jimin's song and Stray Kids' song either. I honestly only know LIKE JENNIE and ah, Whiplash
