[theqoo] ONE YEAR SINCE THE D**TH OF OH YOANNA... LEE HYUN-SEUNG→KIM GA-YOUNG "WEARING BLACK" IN WEATHER SEGMENT

On the first anniversary of the d**th of MBC weathercaster Oh Yoanna, who took her own life due to workplace bull*ing, MBC weathercasters wore black clothing during their weather broadcasts.

On September 15, weathercasters Lee Hyun-seung, Geum Chae-rim, and Kim Ga-young, who present the weather segments for MBC News, News Desk, and News Today, drew attention by wearing black or navy-colored outfits. Their attire appeared to be a gesture of mourning for the anniversary of Oh Yoanna’s passing, contrasting with the typically bright-colored clothing worn by weathercasters. In fact, Kim Ga-young wore a pink dress during the News Today weather segment the following day (September 16).

Oh Yo-anna passed away at the age of 28 on September 15 last year. Her death became known three months later in December. A suicide note found on her phone raised suspicions that she had suffered workplace bull*ing before her d**th.

Following an investigation by an internal fact-finding committee, MBC renewed contracts with weathercasters Kim Ga-young, Lee Hyun-seung, and Choi Ah-ri, who had worked with Oh Yoanna. Meanwhile, MBC terminated its contract with  "A," who had been identified as the alleged perpetrator of the workplace bull*ing. Oh Yoanna’s family is currently pursuing legal action against A.

As a result of a three-month special labor inspection that began in February this year, the Ministry of Employment and Labor acknowledged that bull*ing toward Oh Yoanna had occurred. However, the ministry concluded that since freelance weathercasters are difficult to classify as workers under the Labor Standards Act, the "workplace bull*ing" regulation could not be applied.

On September 15, MBC announced that it would abolish the freelance weathercaster system and instead introduce a “weather and climate expert” system under which staff would be hired as full-time employees. MBC plans to hold an open recruitment process by the end of this year or early next year.

However, Oh Yoanna’s family criticized the new system, saying, “MBC’s announcement means that they still do not recognize Oh Yoanna as a worker,” and called it an act of “k*lling her twice.”
