According to a News1 investigation on the 11th, the Seoul Western District Prosecutors’ Office is currently investigating Jeong on suspicion of violating the Road Traffic Act (driving without a license).
Jeong is said to have driven a vehicle without a license in a provincial city sometime in 2023. At the time, he was 16 years old, too young to legally obtain a driver’s license.
The police investigated the case until earlier this year and then transferred it to the prosecution. The case was originally handled by the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office but was transferred to the Seoul Western District Prosecutors' Office, considering Jeong’s registered address and other factors.
According to Article 82 of the Road Traffic Act, individuals can obtain a driver’s license, including a Class 1 regular license, starting at age 18. Driving without a license is punishable by up to 10 months in prison or a fine of up to 3 million KRW.
News1 has made multiple attempts to contact Jeong’s representatives for a statement, but there has been no response so far.
Jeong Dongwon rose to fame through TV Chosun’s Mr. Trot in 2020. He was a first-year middle school student at the time and finished in 5th place in the competition.
In March 2023, Jeong was also caught driving a motorcycle on Seoul’s Dongbu Expressway, where two-wheeled vehicles are prohibited, and was given a deferred prosecution (non-indictment) decision.
