[theqoo] 'KDH' EJAE, "K-POP SEEMS TOO INFLUENCED BY ANGLO-AMERICAN POP... KOREAN ROOTS MUST BE PRESERVED

EJAE (Kim Lee Jae), composer of the “K-POP DEMON HUNTERS” OST, emphasised the Korean charm K-pop must uphold while clearly outlining K-culture's global orientation.

Regarding the “K-pop localisation” strategy, EJAE highlighted “harmony while preserving essence” as key, discussing the vision for the global K-pop era.

EJAE stated, ‘The standard of K-pop is so high that I felt nervous even when releasing the OST “GOLDEN”. It possesses a particularly delicate charm.’ She added, ‘While K-pop often adopts pop styles for global audiences, I believe it must preserve its essence, including Korean lyrics, whilst incorporating pop elements appropriately.’

She added, ‘I feel K-pop is leaning heavily towards pop. I understand the prevalence of English lyrics. But Korean is such a beautiful language. If it's K-pop, it should include Korean. Instead, K-pop and English should blend well together. I know both English and the nuances of Korean, so the two languages need to harmonise seamlessly for listeners to appreciate it properly.’

She further emphasised, ‘I think K-pop should focus on Korea. While it tries to be very pop, Korea is so beautiful that it's better to just keep going in a Korean direction. Korean culture has its own distinct character. Whatever you do, it's good to do it in a Korean way. If you go to America, it's important to blend in American culture so it can be digested there. But Korea must be present.’

1. For real, please use more Korean

2. TWICE's 'This is For' was a Korean comeback but I was doubting my eyes when I saw that all the lyrics were in Englishã… ã…  even as a fan.... Of course, the explanation of the lyrics was cool but where's the Korean...

3. Ever since Bangtan succeeded in the US with an English song, all of K-pop singers started putting English in their lyrics. I just feel like the proportion of English is becoming way too big. I liked Bangtan's songs the most when their lyrics were mostly Koreanã…

4. English aside, I don't know why do they keep taking random pop references and mixing them all together, pretending to be trendy... especially that one agency

5. They are supposed to be songs targeted to Korea but I need to learn English to understand the lyrics

6. Please reduce the amount of English in K-pop

7. She's right

8. I get so annoyed of K-pop songs lately that I stopped listening to them. There's a lot of English but even for Korean, they barely pronounce the words properly. I can't even tell if it's English or Korean

9. I agree. I would be shocked when I hear old songs popping up on my algorithm. The lyrics are all in Korean and the story is beautiful

10. That's why I still only listen to 2nd gen's songs... K-pop's charms have completely disappeared now
