Evidence has emerged suggesting that portions of text messages between actor Kim Soohyun and the late Kim Saeron, released by the YouTube channel ‘Garo Sero Research Institute,’ were fabricated. On the day Kim Soohyun was reported to have contacted the deceased while on leave from military service, he was confirmed to have been at his base.
According to a Money Today investigation on the 5th, the deceased's family released text messages allegedly sent by Kim Soohyun to Kim Saeron through ‘Garo Sero Research Institute’ last March.
The messages show Kim Soohyun texting Kim Saeron around 1:48 PM on Monday, April 2, 2018, saying, “Everyone's so energetic,” and “Ah, I really want to see Saeromero (the deceased's nickname, a misspelling of Saeronero) soon.”
When Kim Saeron asked, “When should we meet?”, Kim Soohyun replied, “We planned to meet on Thursday (the 5th), with XX (a friend's name),” and “I want to see you right now.” Kim Soohyun also said, “I'll go to the hospital later today, have dinner, and go to the gym, so I'll be back around 9 PM.”
The deceased was a high school sophomore that year, aged 17. The bereaved family and Kim Se-ui's representative claimed these text messages prove Kim Soohyun and the deceased dated for six years from 2015 to 2021.
However, Kim Soohyun was undergoing intensive training at his military unit at the time. His diary, obtained by Money Today, contains an entry dated April 2 of that year stating, “Today marked the end of the 6th operation. It's now too hot during search operations, and I'm sweating profusely.” Media reports also confirm that Kim Soohyun participated in training conducted in the operational area two days later on April 4.
Kim Soohyun also mentioned in his diary dated the 6th of the same month that he was “looking forward to his vacation.” This means he was at the base at least from April 2 to 6, 2018. It has been pointed out that it doesn't add up that Kim Soohyun made plans to meet Kim Saeron on the day he was at the base (April 5).
Kim Soohyun's diary frequently mentions his then-girlfriend, Ms. A. In his entry dated the 2nd, he wrote: “Every time I write in my diary, I feel more spirited. Now I just want to meet you quickly and show you this. Only one operation left. I'll rush over soon. I'll make your heart race soon. I love you. Let's go see the cherry blossoms soon. I hope they're in full bloom.”
In the entry dated the 6th, he wrote: “I want to write your name so badly, but I can't because I'm too obsessed. I want to write your name so badly. I love you,” and “Later, I'll have to brag that you did my entire military service for me.” Conversely, there is not a single line mentioning the deceased.
Kim Soohyun's legal representative, Attorney Ko Sang-rok, pointed out, “Even looking at just some of the materials reveals contradictions between the bereaved family's and Gaseyeon's claims. It appears they mixed up conversation content Kim Saeron had with another man with Kim Soohyun's text messages. Even if they had checked thoroughly (just the vacation period), they could have confirmed these weren't KakaoTalk messages sent by Kim Soohyun.”
Attorney Ko emphasized, “Even with the minimal materials disclosed, the materials previously released by Gaseyeon are being refuted,” adding, “All of Gaseyeon's claims can be proven.”
