I feel like the most obvious example of this is Taennie because they were literally caught in 4K but the extremely delusional fans were crying photoshop (to this day i still don’t get why blinks and armys were fighting, two hot people are dating) and for an example of rumors that had this plausible deniability that fans usually use, Wonbin and NingNing got into dating rumors with each other. The proof was; Wonbin’s thumb in her birthday post, him singing a song in mandarin, some matching/sharing clothes, her reaction to his appearance on stage at an award show—as soon as he appeared she smiled and started whispering to the member next to her, and i think more i’m forgetting.
In my brain, this was enough evidence to prove that they at least had something going on but I guess, in addition to his multiple dating rumors with all of her other members (and other girl idols in general) and the aespa girlies in general also always having dating rumors, it lost credibility because no one believed it.
This isn’t like a “oh they’re all young, hot, and rich so they MUST be dating/screwing lots of ppl” type of post, but I do think it’s more likely that most of these idols would be dating because I think of the industry as a sort of college campus—maybe a community or regional campus—and that most of them are close with, or at least familiar with each other. I mean, it’s common knowledge that during trainee times they could’ve switched companies so they know idols from other groups/companies that they trained with.
Also I don’t believe the bs that guy and girl trainees are separated lmao. An SNSD member literally brought up an anecdote on her show where she didn’t want to do the prompt for her acting class in front of the “handsome Oppa(s) [trainees]”. And I think it’s even funnier when fans believe idols just because they say it’s not true—what sane person that cares about their safety and career would admit to dating for their job that relies on parasocial relationships (not even only in relation to dating but when they deny anything else as well).
I hope this post doesn’t come off as bitter to idols for denying their dating rumors or sasaengy or anything like that. I’m a nosy person and I like hearing about dating rumors—even when it’s not confirmed, the speculation makes it more fun to me—but it bums me out when fans get their panties all in a bunch to try and find all the reasons under the sun to prove they aren’t dating instead of just having fun with it.
I remember the Kai, Wonyoung, Yuna lore thing and it was so fun seeing people joke about a love triangle between them. I also had fun with the 2nd gen dating rumors and stuff, though the fans were so terrible (my girl groups were getting wacked HARD ugh—esp SNSD).
There’s also more dating rumors from 4th/5th gen that were denied but I believe, like Jungwon and Winter especially since chinese fans continued to upload proof on weibo even after it died down, but I’ll shutup—in all honesty, as long as you don’t comment under artists posts with ship names or whatever speculation you have, I don’t see the problem in indulging in rumors a bit. If anything, I think it could help de stigmatize idol couples if anyone actually does decide they want to go public with it.
In a perfect world, we’d be able to over analyze simple interactions/coincidences without idols being harmed in the process but alas, that’s just a pipe dream of mine. (Though I do find the difference between reactions for Western dating gossip and Kpop dating gossip fascinating—I understand why it’s different, but it’s still an interesting dichotomy)
p.s. if this gets uploaded, this is a gossip site where you guys bash idols for existing, so I don’t wanna see that usual touchy bs where you guys think you have the moral high ground and wack on people for being curious about their dating lives.
