The Avatar franchise, which once achieved the “double ten-million” milestone in Korea, has kicked off full-scale promotion ahead of the release of its new installment. With visits announced for North America, its home base, as well as various locations in Europe and Asia, Korea will be bypassed this time.
According to Walt Disney Company on the 21st, Avatar: Fire and Ash will have its world premiere on December 1 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, followed by a full global premiere tour.
The tour, which spans a total of 11 cities, will proceed as follows: France (Paris) on the 5th, China (Sanya) on the 8th, Italy (Milan) and Spain (Madrid) on the 9th, Japan (Tokyo) on the 10th, the United Kingdom (London) on the 11th, New Zealand (Wellington) on the 13th, Australia (Sydney) and Mexico (Mexico City) on the 15th, and Canada (Toronto) on the 17th. Korea is not included.
The attendance and lineup of director James Cameron and the cast for the tour have not been disclosed. However, it has been confirmed that Team Avatar: Fire and Ash has no plans to visit Korea. A domestic representative for the film also told Ilgan Sports, “This time, (the director and cast) will not be visiting Korea.” The reasons given were the impracticality of covering every market and their previous visit, disappointing news for Korean fans.
Avatar is a franchise with a strong fanbase in Korea. The first film, Avatar (2009), drew 13.33 million viewers domestically and was a major hit. Its sequel Avatar: The Way of Water (2022) also attracted 10.82 million viewers. When the second installment was released, director James Cameron, producer Jon Landau, and actors Stephen Lang, Sigourney Weaver, Zoe Saldana, and Sam Worthington all visited Korea to meet fans.
One consolation is that Korea will be among the first to see the movie. Avatar: Fire and Ash is expected to reach Korean audiences on December 17.
