“Penalties and Retesting Under Review”
Following recent revelations of group cheating at several universities, evidence has emerged that students at Seoul National University (SNU) also engaged in collective cheating using artificial intelligence (AI) during an in-person midterm exam. The university is currently reviewing the facts and considering invalidating the entire test.
According to Maeil Business Newspaper on the 12th, during the recent midterm exam for the liberal arts course Statistical Experiments, multiple students were caught using AI tools to solve problems. The course, offered by SNU’s College of Business Administration, is an in-person class with around 30 students, mostly first-years. Grades are based on the midterm and final exams as well as attendance.
The exam in question was conducted in person using computers provided in a classroom on SNU’s Gwanak Campus. Because of the nature of the course, which involves coding, students were required to use computers to complete many of the problems.
Before the test, the school explicitly announced that the use of AI tools or sharing answers with other students during the exam was strictly prohibited. However, it was later discovered that several students had used AI programs such as ChatGPT to generate their answers during the test.
The course instructor reportedly detected traces of AI-generated code in multiple students’ submissions. After confirming the facts, the university plans to impose penalties on the students involved in the cheating and is considering holding a retest.
