An intriguing finding published by a Hungarian research team is generating buzz. It suggests that individuals deeply immersed in celebrity gossip and news tend to exhibit lower cognitive abilities.

The study, published in BMC Psychology, tested 1,763 adults using a vocabulary test (30 words) and a symbol-to-number substitution task. It also measured participants' Celebrity Attitude Scale to quantify ‘how immersed they are in celebrities’.

The results were clear: higher celebrity interest scores correlated with poorer performance on both cognitive tests. The researchers analyzed that “excessive interest in celebrities may interfere with attention and information processing abilities.”

Of course, this is merely a correlation, not a definitive causal relationship.
