[theqoo] SUNMI, HURT FROM WONDER GIRLS DAYS "SEEING THE GIFTS POPULAR MEMBERS RECEIVED, I WAS THE MOST INSIGNIFICANT MEMBER IN THE GROUP"

Singer Sunmi opened up about a story she had been struggling with silently.

On November 20, the SPNS TV channel released a Shoes Off video titled “A Deep Inner Story I Can Finally Talk About.”

In the video, Sunmi talked about the difficulties she faced during her Wonder Girls days. She said, “When I was in Wonder Girls, I had a nickname: ‘Delivery-mi.’ In a way, I was a member who stood out less compared to the others. I wasn’t exceptionally good at singing, or dancing, or particularly pretty, or with a great body. So I always felt like I had the least presence.”

She continued, “The other members had many fans, like Sohee and Sunye unnie. But the popularity shifted depending on the song. During ‘So Hot,’ Yoobin unnie was really popular. Fans would come to the company building, and fans of other members would say, ‘Sunmi-yah, I’m sorry, but could you give this to her?’ and I would deliver it along.”

Sunmi, who was 16 years old at the time, said, “At university festivals or performances, we’d do a group greeting and then individual greetings. You can’t help but notice the difference in decibels. You can brush it off as ‘that’s just how it is,’ but at the time I was a 16-year-old kid, so it really hurt.”

She added, “I was in my third year of middle school, so I was pretty rebellious inside. I didn’t show it, but inside I thought, ‘Even if I greet people, I have no presence anyway. What’s the point of greeting brightly?’ There were times I felt that way. I shrank back.” She went on, “When you’re in a group, there are moments that are hard to accept but you have to. Those kinds of situations existed.”

When asked whether she now feels freed from those past emotions after succeeding as a solo artist, Sunmi replied, “I am freed from it, but if I had to go back to that situation, I think I’d still be hurt.” Even so, she added, “I think the most important thing in group activities is yielding. I’m so grateful to Wonder Girls because even though we were in situations where we could have easily gotten greedy, we really yielded and understood each other a lot,” expressing gratitude to her members.

1. Seriously this isn't a job that you should be doing when you're young... Imagine how hurtful it must've been. I would be hurt even if I was an adult.

2. This is why whenever netizens perceive things like "Popular VS unpopular member vs hard-carry member" as showdown, I'm sure the people involved don't perceive it that way. First of all, celebrities debut because they crave attention, but imagine getting compared with others your age and being ignored. My self-esteem will be completely ruined

3. The fans asking her to deliver stuff are too much ã…

4. Sunmi is so popular now though.. ㅜㅜㅜ Seriously I was an all-fan of WG and even the 2 "unpopular ones" were popular. She did well in the US promotions too, and when Sunmi took her break, the fandom was in shambles. When the members started leaving, I feel like it really affected Sunmi

5. Seriously idols must all have some kind of mental illness. You will have to endure the most psychologically sensitive topics like being judged for your looks all the time ㅜㅜ

6. I wasn't an WG fan, but I felt like Sunmi stood out the most... But people asking her to deliver stuff are just too much no?

7. I liked Sunmi the most in WG though...

8. She was put in an environment where she had to be popular, but she was always feeling the popularity gap with people around her. It must've been so hard to center her mind

9. I still think that Sunmi was the most successful though. But you really can't predict what they think

10. Regarding the cheers level, even if you're not young, you'd still be hurt by stuff like this
