First of all, the biggest thing is that they can’t really sing and there’s no clear main vocal / main dancer / main rapper positions. I absolutely hate ILLIT’s age-regression magical-girl hardcore otaku concept, really dislike LE SSERAFIM’s otaku girl-crush concept, and NewJeans feels boring, forced, and cringe to me so I’m not into them either. ENHYPEN and TXT’s otaku concepts are an absolute, hardcore no for me. BOYNEXTDOOR, KATSEYE, and CORTIS are honestly the least cringe out of the bunch, but CORTIS has tons of plagiarism controversies. Looking at it now, all HYBE groups kinda give off that hardcore otaku vibe, so I think I instinctively feel repelled by them.
I’ll exclude SEVENTEEN and fromis_9 since they were acquired. And I also hate HYBE’s signature mechanical/processed sound. Anyway, I know HYBE’s efforts and experiments for K-pop are genuinely impressive, but for some reason I just can’t feel attached to them. I’m curious how things will turn out in the future.
