Fantagio Entertainment finds itself caught between tears and laughter over two artists. While newly signed actor Kim Seonho announced his return as the ‘rom-com king’ with a new project, the company's flagship star, singer-actor Cha Eunwoo, faces his biggest crisis since debut amid allegations of tax evasion.
Fantagio signed Kim Seonho last March. This came amid rumors that Kim was moving to Hi-Z Studio, the agency representing Song Joongki and others. Fantagio's decision to sign him instead drew extraordinary industry attention as an unexpected outcome.
At the time, Fantagio pledged support for Kim Seonho, describing him as “an actor who is loved widely for his stable acting skills and unique charm across various fields.” Industry analysis widely suggested that signing Kim Seonho was a strategic move to fill the void left by Cha Eunwoo, who was preparing for his mandatory military service.
Kim Seonho previously faced difficulties when embroiled in a personal scandal just as he was rising to top actor status following the success of the drama ‘Hometown Cha Cha Cha’. After the controversy, Kim Seonho took a hiatus before quietly returning to theater and film.
Kim Seonho returned to the stage in 2022 with the play ‘Touching the Void’ and resumed activities by attempting a transformation in his acting with the film ‘The Gentleman’. Ironically, the work that signaled his definitive comeback, after focusing primarily on his craft through projects following his return, was another romantic comedy.
He showcased his presence as Park Choong-seop, the lover of Geum-myeong (played by IU), in last year's globally popular Netflix series “When Life Gives You Tangerines,” and recently announced his comeback as the “rom-com king” through the Netflix series “Can You Translate This Love?”
'Can You Translate This Love?' climbed to #2 on Netflix's Global Top 10 Non-English Shows within just three days of its release. It garnered attention both domestically and internationally, drawing acclaim as the Jakarta fan showcase featuring the cast and director concluded successfully.
Kim Seonho showcased his signature strengths without reservation. His tender and sensitive aura, stable low-mid range voice, and natural everyday acting brought depth to his character. He also faithfully embodied the character's professional setting as a multilingual interpreter, demonstrating his acting prowess.
Ultimately, Kim Seonho showcased his strengths in his primary field, demonstrating his potential as a ‘rom-com king’ and successfully making a complete comeback as an actor. Meanwhile, Cha Eunwoo, who shares the same agency, faced backlash amid allegations of evading 20 billion won in taxes while serving in the military.
On the very day Kim Seonho was conducting interviews with reporters to commemorate the release of ‘Can This Love Be Translated?’, allegations of tax evasion surfaced against Cha Eunwoo. This led to an ironic situation where their agency experienced both tears and laughter on the same day.
A recent media report stated that Cha Eunwoo underwent an intensive investigation by the Seoul Regional Tax Office in the first half of last year on suspicion of tax evasion. He was notified by the National Tax Service of a tax assessment exceeding 20 billion won for allegedly evading income tax through a newly established one-person agency-like corporation founded by his mother.
In response, his agency stated, “The key issue in this case is whether Cha Eunwoo's mother is the actual subject of taxation. This matter has not yet been finalized or officially notified. We plan to actively present our case regarding issues related to legal interpretation and application through proper legal procedures.”
A few days later, Cha Eunwoo also posted on his SNS, stating, "I will sincerely cooperate with the upcoming tax-related procedures. Furthermore, I will humbly accept the final judgment issued by the relevant authorities and fulfill my responsibilities accordingly."
However, some fans expressed disappointment that the statement did not clearly address the tax evasion allegations and that it was posted on the birthday of the late Moonbin, a member of the same group ASTRO.
Furthermore, Cha Eunwoo is currently preparing for the release of his next project. With the Netflix series ‘Wonders’ scheduled for release in the second quarter, the allegations surrounding its lead actor, Cha Eunwoo, have surfaced, placing a heavy burden on those involved in the production as well.
