The possibility of a comeback for X1, a group overshadowed by the ‘vote manipulation scandal,’ has opened up.
It was confirmed on the 22nd that Ahn Joonyoung, the Mnet producer who served a prison sentence for vote manipulation allegations in Mnet's audition program ‘Produce Series,’ recently met with some X1 members and proposed their participation in a reality entertainment program.
The program is currently under discussion and has not been confirmed for broadcast.
The key question is whether X1, following in the footsteps of Wanna One, can ride the wave of nostalgia for the ‘Produce Series’ and shed its disgrace.
X1 debuted in August 2019 after being selected on ‘Produce X 101’, but was disbanded in disgrace just five months later when vote manipulation on the show was exposed. The members were branded as a ‘manipulated group’ and dispersed to their respective agencies.
Whether PD Ahn will directly oversee the reality entertainment program featuring X1 is also a point of interest. PD Ahn was sentenced to two years in prison in May 2020 for the ‘Produce voting manipulation scandal’ and was released after serving his full term in November 2021.
Fans are also watching to see if X1 will use the reality variety show as a springboard for a comeback.
