In those programs, we see very personal moments with parents and their kids, especially the fathers, since the shows usually revolve around them taking care of the children while the mothers take a break. We see their daily routines, and even things like babies taking showers or getting changed get filmed (though censored later). And now there’s that newer KBS channel with the “My Dream Friend” segment, where idols are brought in to take care of and play with babies.
On the one hand, I sorta get why these shows keep getting made since they’re pretty cute and wholesome. A lot of people genuinely enjoy seeing a softer side of idols or watching families interact in a natural (or semi-natural) way. Shows Return of Superman had huge, long-term success because viewers love seeing different parenting styles and cute kid moments.
But there are some issues I find with this type of content. These kids are basically growing up in front of tons of strangers, and not all of them can understand (or consent to) the long-term exposure. There’s also the ethical side of filming kids during super private moments. Even if the footage is censored or edited, it still feels questionable and gross that moments like diaper changes or bath time are filmed in the first place.
I don’t think all baby-centric content is terrible…some of it is genuinely sweet, and some families seem to really enjoy doing the shows. But I do think there should be clearer boundaries: what’s appropriate to film, how much exposure is too much, and whether kids should be part of this type content in the first place.
