[theqoo] DIRECTOR BYUN YOUNG-JOO, ADDRESSES QUESTION TO HYBE VS MIN HEEJIN "WHY CAN'T WE SEE NEWJEANS?"

Director Byun Young-joo delivered pointed remarks about the overall K-culture system in response to the controversy involving HYBE and NewJeans. She stressed that the current conflict should not be reduced to the problem of a specific individual or company, but rather should prompt reflection on the industry structure itself, which repeatedly produces the same kinds of situations.

Director Byun recently appeared on the YouTube program “Jung Jun-hee’s Saturday Debate,” where she discussed the topic “Is K-culture really doing well?” The conversation addressed the bleak outlook for the film and video industry, as well as the structural problems facing the K-pop industry.

Byun noted, “K-pop, another crucial pillar of K-culture, has for several years now been explained by the phrase ‘we haven’t seen another NewJeans.’” He added, “We need to ask what kind of system it is that allows situations like this to repeat themselves periodically.”

Media studies professor Jung Jun-hee echoed this view, saying, “We need to look at why a beloved artist like NewJeans ends up being consumed only as a question of ‘who’s right and who’s wrong’ in the conflict between HYBE and Min Heejin, while the artists themselves are placed in a situation where they can do nothing.” He explained, “This isn’t because the artists chose the wrong side, but because of the structure of the music industry itself.” Jung added, “Even great artists can’t do anything if the industry structure doesn’t support them. Ultimately, we’ve arrived at an environment where industry logic and legal rights dictate everything.”

Director Byun particularly emphasized the damage caused by halting activities. He said, “NewJeans should be able to continue promoting, and if there are legal disputes between companies or individuals, those should be fought separately.” He continued, “In a trend-driven music industry, being unable to work for over a year is a serious blow, and it’s also disrespectful to consumers.” He stressed, “Artists have both the right and the responsibility to continue creating and exchanging their work with the public, yet they are always the ones blocked at the front line. That makes this structure fundamentally unfair.”

Professor Jung pointed out, “In a system where large agencies nurture artists from a young age to maximize profits, legal rights have become excessively important, and excluded artists face a growing risk of being treated not as creative subjects but as managed objects or assets.” Director Byun agreed, saying, “In the end, the most important issue becomes ‘who owns whom.’”

original post: here

1. HYBE probably secured their IP and deleted NewJeans ㅜ

2. For real, I miss their music

3. It's because they don't put food on their table anymore

4. But if NewJeans didn't follow Min Heejin, they would've been able to keep promoting

5. I feel bad for them, it's like they were the third party stuck in someone else's fight

6. ADOR: Promote
NewJeans: We won't unless Min Heejin is here. We want to leave

7. It's because NewJeans themselves said that they didn't want to promote in the company that debuted them..

8. What's so great about NewJeans?

9. Seriously why did they do this, what a waste

10. It's so true, there's no other idols like NewJeans...
