As news spread that singer and actor Cha Eunwoo had been notified by the National Tax Service of an additional tax assessment amounting to around 20 billion won, suspicions of tax evasion intensified, with the controversy now extending to an eel restaurant previously run by his mother.
Claims emerged that the eel restaurant “Eoje-yeon Charcoal-Grilled Eel,” formerly operated in Ganghwa Island, Incheon, had relocated and reopened late last year in Cheongdam-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, under the name “Eoje-yeon Cheongdam.” As the tax controversy surrounding Cha Eunwoo grew, online speculation spread that the restaurant may have moved because of the issue, fueling further criticism.
However, it has been confirmed that “Eoje-yeon Cheongdam” is unrelated to Cha Eun-woo’s mother or family. The restaurant is owned by Cha Eun-woo’s agency, Fantagio, and is operated by Fantagio M, a wholly owned subsidiary of Fantagio.
According to Fantagio, when Cha Eunwoo’s family decided to close the Ganghwa Island eel restaurant last year, the company took over and continued operating the business under the same name. Some employees who had worked at the original restaurant were rehired, and the restaurant is now being run as a newly established corporate entity. Fantagio maintains that the Ganghwa location and the Cheongdam location have entirely different corporate, ownership, and operational structures.
A Fantagio representative stated on the 2nd, “The currently operating ‘Eoje-yeon Cheongdam’ is a completely different corporation from ‘Eoje-yeon Charcoal-Grilled Eel’ in Ganghwa,” adding, “The restaurant is operated by Fantagio M and has no connection to Cha Eunwoo’s family.”
Meanwhile, amid the tax evasion allegations, attention has also turned to the substance of Corporation A, which was established by Cha Eunwoo’s mother. Corporation A was founded in October 2022 and registered its address in Deokseong-ri, Bureun-myeon, Ganghwa County, Incheon. This address is reportedly the same as that of the eel restaurant long operated by Cha Eunwoo’s parents.
Corporation A did not change its registered address to an office in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam District, Seoul, until December 23 of last year. The National Tax Service is reportedly examining whether Corporation A is connected to Cha Eunwoo’s income structure and whether it engaged in any substantive business activities.
