Liu Xiaoqing (75), known in China as a “national actress” and a “vampire beauty” who seems not to age, has become the center of heated controversy in China after portraying a teenage girl in a mini drama and filming a kissing scene with a younger male actor.
According to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 4th (local time), Liu Xiaoqing played the role of “Suo Wancheng,” an 18-year-old embroidery artisan, in the 80-episode mini drama “The Rise of Ning,” which aired in February. In the drama, she portrays a character who overcomes the disgrace of her family and eventually becomes the wife of Prince Jing.
Gender equality activist Wang Yang commented on the controversy, saying, “If a male actor were 30 years older than a female actor, would there have been this much criticism?” He pointed out what he described as a double standard regarding gender and age in the entertainment industry.
Meanwhile, Liu Xiaoqing stated, “The kissing scene was an essential part of the script, and I respect the creative process.” She also revealed her passion for acting, saying that she plans to appear in 10 short dramas this year alone.
Liu Xiaoqing, who debuted in the 1970s and swept prestigious Chinese film awards such as the Golden Rooster Awards and the Hundred Flowers Awards, has also lived a turbulent life, including spending over 400 days in prison in the past on tax evasion charges. After being released, she returned to the entertainment industry and has continued to attract attention by consistently taking roles much younger than her real age, such as playing a 16-year-old princess at age 58, and an 18-year-old bandit in 2023.
