I have been thinking about this for a while. What happened to Taeyong? He used to top male idol visual lists and go viral left and right for looking like he came out straight from an anime, was No.1 in the "most handsome idol" category in a survey voted by idols themselves less than a year into his debut. A lot of koreans did not forgive him for his controversies but his visuals still were highly recognized.
Though, as years passed by, Jaehyun ended up taking that "top male visual" spot from him and is now often mentioned along with Cha Eunwoo and V/Jin when it comes to 3rd gen male visuals. Of course Jaehyun has always been recognized for his visuals but he wasn't this big before, it also shocked me that he appeared in a male idol visual Japan poll this year while Taeyong, whose face is supposed to be Japan's style, did not at all. Some people would assume that Taeyong's visuals downgraded but to be honest I think both of them are past their prime (this does NOT mean that they are ugly now).
I don't know much about EXO but wasn't Sehun supposed to be their visual member too? I remember that EXOLs used to say that he was the biggest 3rd gen male visual. Yet Kai eventually stole all the attention internationally, while in South Korea they prefer Suho.
In NMIXX we also had a situation like this, Kyujin was JYP's biggest promise, as the center of the group not visual, but got overshadowed by Haewon and Sullyoon. I think JYP is particularly bad at this, if you witnessed ITZY's pre-debut trainee promotions you would think Yuna was going to be a filler member, but she was a surprise after they finally debuted. Yuna's popularity has been growing since then and now she is the member with the biggest potential for a successful solo career.
What do you think about these? Were there any other situations like this besides the ones I mentioned? Do you think it will happen to any 5th gen group that we're watching now?
