The Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation, under the Korea Heritage Service, announced on the 11th the publication of a catalog titled "IT'S ____ HERE: Brilliant Korean Paintings from Abroad," featuring 24 Korean paintings housed in major museums and galleries overseas.
The initiative aims to make cultural heritage more accessible to Korean citizens and researchers, given the difficulty of repatriating such works. The foundation stated, "This catalog was produced with donations from BTS member RM in 2022. It is designed as an art book that allows both the public and researchers broad access to the artistic and cultural value of Korean paintings scattered across the world."
The catalog encompasses approximately 400 years of Korean painting, from the early 16th century to the 20th century. It includes major genres such as landscape paintings, portraits, bird-and-flower paintings, and documentary paintings, as well as various formats including folding screens and hanging scrolls, vividly showcasing the broad spectrum of Korean painting.
The publication features Korean paintings selected from collections in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, and other countries, offering fresh perspectives on the current status and artistic value of Korean cultural heritage dispersed globally. High-resolution images and scholarly commentaries are included, making the catalog suitable for academic research as well as exhibition and educational purposes.
A foundation official explained, "As the title suggests, these works transcend mere cultural heritage and serve as cultural bridges connecting Korea and the world. RM's affection for traditional culture, demonstrated through his sponsorship, has further elevated the value of this catalog."
The catalog will be distributed to public libraries and major research institutions both domestically and internationally.
According to the foundation, as of January 1 this year, Korean cultural heritage scattered across various countries totals 121,143 items comprising 256,190 pieces. This figure is based on surveys of 801 institutions including museums and galleries in 29 countries such as Japan, the United States, and Germany. The number increased by 8,472 pieces compared to the January 2024 count of 247,718 pieces.
