[theqoo] LIM O-KYEONG EXPRESSES DISAPPOINTMENT OVER NETFLIX STREAMING BTS' COMEBACK... "PLEASE CONSIDER USING KOREAN OTT SUPPORT SERVICES"

Global OTT Netflix will exclusively live-stream BTS's comeback concert in Seoul's Gwanghwamun on the 21st. Regarding this, Rep. Lim O-kyeong of the Democratic Party of Korea (ruling party secretary) on the National Assembly's Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee urged the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to “consider support measures for global OTTs when broadcasting K-content.”

During the committee's plenary session on the 4th, Rep. Lim questioned Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Choi Hwi-young, who attended to report on ministry affairs: “Do you understand what Netflix's exclusive broadcast signifies? People worldwide cannot watch the BTS concert unless they subscribe to Netflix. This means Netflix has essentially relinquished its IP rights.” She added, "You appointed representatives from entertainment agencies as private members to the Public Culture Exchange Committee. While you emphasized fostering domestic OTT platforms, broadcasting rights for major cultural events went to a foreign company. Have you considered the potential opportunity loss for the domestic industry?"

Minister Choi Hwi-young responded, "I understand this was a decision made by the agency after careful consideration from various angles. I hope you understand that it was not feasible for the government to step in and intervene.“ Rep. Lim pressed back, ”This performance is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Popular Culture Exchange Committee. Shouldn't they have also considered streaming the BTS performance on a domestic FAST (ad-supported free streaming) platform?"

He continued, “I believe that going forward, whenever entertainment agencies hold large-scale K-content performances, they should obtain prior approval from the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism or the Popular Culture Exchange Committee regarding broadcasting. Rather than simply saying ‘yes’ or ‘no,’ I urge consideration of a comprehensive support plan where the government provides financial, tax, and infrastructure support when domestic OTT platforms cooperate for global broadcasting of the content.”

10. Can't you just keep your mouth shut? Do you really need to show off how empty your head is?
