RM (31, real name Kim Namjoon), the leader of the group BTS, has been embroiled in allegations that he smoked a cigarette in a no-smoking zone and littered a cigarette butt after a concert in Japan.
According to a report by the Japanese weekly magazine 'Shukan Bunshun' on the 22nd, RM, who was in Japan for his world tour, recently went out for drinks with acquaintances in the bustling Shibuya district of Tokyo.
RM and his group moved from one pub to another and to various bars, smoking on the streets and in building hallways. It is reported that they smoked despite clear no-smoking signs at some of these locations.
A security guard at the scene told 'Shukan Bunshun', “RM simply tossed his cigarette butt on the ground at his feet.” The guard reportedly confronted RM directly about this. The media outlet reported that after the group left, a female staff member cleaned up the area, picking up the cigarette butt and sweeping away the ashes.
Indeed, among the 20 or so photos released by the media, there are images of RM smoking with an acquaintance, as well as the back view of a staff member kneeling beside them to clean up.
Since Japan enforces strict regulations on smoking in public spaces depending on the region, there is generally high social sensitivity regarding smoking in public places.
Local netizens have shown mixed reactions. While some pointed out RM’s poor smoking etiquette and expressed disappointment, others argued that since the incident occurred during a private outing, cultural differences and privacy should also be taken into consideration.
Regarding this matter, no official statement has yet been released by his agency, Big Hit Music, its parent company HYBE, or RM himself.
