[theqoo] BECAUSE OF BYUN WOOSEOK'S ACTING CONTROVERSY... GONG SEUNGYEON ENDS UP BECOMING THE BIGGEST BENEFICIARY OF 'PERFECT CROWN'... A SAD BUT FUNNY REALITY

Thanks to actor Byun Wooseok’s somewhat awkward acting, Gong Seungyeon, who comes across as relatively composed and poised, is reaping an unexpected benefit that makes her shine even brighter. Byun Wooseok and Gong Seungyeon are under the same agency and have been close colleagues for a long time, but with only one of them receiving praise for their acting, the situation has become one where they can’t simply laugh it off.

(...)

Having risen to stardom through 'Lovely Runner', Byun Wooseok had to prove his acting chops in Perfect Crown, if only to show that he wasn’t just a flash-in-the-pan star. He carried that burden from the very beginning.

In fact, Prince Lee An in 'Perfect Crown' is a far more challenging character to portray than Seonjae in 'Lovely Runner'. This is because he must conceal his true feelings as much as possible amidst the royal power struggles, and there are many moments when he must convey deep anguish and emotional shifts solely through his expressions and lines. Compared to Seong Heejoo (played by IU), who wears her heart on her sleeve and acts freely, Prince Lee An might actually be the character that requires even greater depth and skill.

In particular, the scene in Episode 1 where Prince Lee An and Queen Yoon I-rang (played by Gong Seungyeon) engage in a power struggle over the regency of the young king reignited controversy surrounding Byun Wooseok’s acting skills.

It was a scene where, despite the delicate balance of power between Prince Lee An and the Queen remaining intact, Prince Lee An actually raised his voice at her. However, during the nearly two-minute scene, Byun Wooseok’s expression remained stiff, making it difficult to perceive any emotional shifts, and many critics felt he failed to properly convey Prince Lee An turbulent emotions. The scene went viral as a meme on various social media platforms and online communities, sparking a flood of negative comments such as “He can’t act.” At the same time, polarizing reactions emerged regarding Queen Gong Seungyeon, who exuded charisma, with some asking, “Did she always act this well?”

Earlier, at the production press conference for 'Perfect Crown', when asked, “How will you portray the complex character of Prince Lee an?” Byun Wooseok replied, “I discussed it extensively with the director, and I had already talked a lot beforehand to try to do better.” He added, “For this project as well, I did my absolute best and paid extra attention to ensuring that viewers could emotionally connect with the character. I focused solely on the character’s narrative.”

Since the drama is still in its early stages and consists of a total of 12 episodes, there is still a long way to go. While Byun Wooseok’s performance is likely to improve as the story unfolds, the controversy over his acting skills surfacing in what was highly anticipated is a regrettable development.

1. How can I feel his bad acting through the screenshots alone? It's a talent

2. As soon as the trailer was out, I could only see Gong Seungyeon

3. Byun Wooseok's voice is at least not cringe...

4. Gong Seungyeon has always been good at acting. How can this be a "benefit"...

5. She's good because she's hard working and is getting positive feedback. What "benefit"? The choice of word is disgusting

6. Gong Seungyeon is seriously pretty

7. IU's acting is also severe so shouldn't she be the biggest beneficiary for having her bad acting covered up by Byun Wooseok? It's not Gong Seungyeon

8. I don't think that IU's acting is bad but... Gong Seungyeon has just always been good at acting and she was good this time too. Byun Wooseok is too robotic so every time I see him, I let out a sight. His expressions too..

9. IU and Byun Wooseok's acting suck and Gong Seungyeon's acting is just f*cking good. Even if she was paired with good actors, her acting would still be considered good

10. IU just doesn't match her character. Byun Wooseok is definitely lacking. Gong Seungyeon is the only one standing out and her acting is severely good. But as for me... I'm the most disappointed in IUã… ã…¡ã…  It feels like she's wearing clothes that don't fit her compared to all the spectrum of roles she played so far. There are people saying that she doesn't fit fancy roles but she really matched Jang Manwol in Del Luna..
