A video showing the final moments of the late director Kim Chang-min, who was fatally as***lted while trying to protect his son with developmental disabilities, has been released, causing widespread shock.
According to a report by JTBC on the 31st of last month, CCTV footage from the time of the incident captured a horrific scene that took place in the early morning of October 20 last year at a 24-hour restaurant in Guri, Gyeonggi Province. Director Kim had gone to the restaurant because his son, who has autistic tendencies, wanted to eat pork cutlet, but became involved in a dispute with customers at another table.
In the footage, Kim is seen being struck by the assailants and collapsing to the floor, but the violence does not stop. The attackers are even seen dragging his unconscious body across the floor and continuing their as***lt in an inhumane manner. After the incident, there was about a one-hour delay before he was transported to the hospital, causing him to miss the critical “golden time.” He was ultimately declared brain-dead and, a month later, donated his organs to four people before passing away.
The bereaved family has expressed anger over the inadequate initial response and the slow investigation. Although the police identified two suspects and requested arrest warrants, the court dismissed them, stating that the suspects had stable residences and posed no flight risk. Kim’s younger sister pleaded, “It’s terrifying that the attacker lives less than 10 km away.” Eventually, the suspects were only recently forwarded to prosecutors without detention, five months after the incident.
Born in 1985, Director Kim Chang-min was a promising talent who began his career in the props team for the film The Suspect and went on to work on The Drug King and The Witch, earning recognition for his skills. In particular, he had just begun to blossom as a director, having won the Best Director award at the Police Human Rights Film Festival in 2016, making his d**th all the more tragic.
The bereaved family stated, “Our hearts break when we think of the son left alone after losing his father,” and called for strict punishment. The late director, who saved four lives through organ donation before passing, was remembered at his funeral by the screenplay he left behind.
