Maggie Kang (pictured left) and director Chris Appelhans of K-Pop Demon Hunters, who concluded their winning journey by receiving an Oscar (Academy) trophy, made these remarks regarding the sequel they are aiming to release in 2029.
The two attended a press conference held at CGV Yongsan in Seoul on the 1st to commemorate their Academy Award win. Also present were Ejae (right), the vocalist and producer of the main OST "Golden," as well as composers Kwak Joong-kyu, Lee Yoo-han, and Nam Hee-dong (IDO) from The Black Label.
Regarding questions about the sequel, Director Maggie Kang remained tight-lipped, stating, "I don't think I can reveal details about the sequel. I want to keep it a secret." However, she revealed her thoughts, saying, "Since Trot is a traditional Korean style, I want to promote it further to the world, and I also want to try heavy metal as it is a genre that can serve as a foundation for K-Pop."
Director Appelhans emphasized, “Rather than repeating the existing framework, the sequel will expand by defying expectations and breaking the rules,” adding, “At the same time, ‘Korean identity’ lies at the foundation of everything.”
Director Appelhans, who has a Korean wife who works as a painter, continued, “Through my wife, I felt that Koreans become strong after going through many hardships, and that they possess strength and pride in that process,” adding, “I was delighted to be able to show this aspect to the world through the story of Rumi (the protagonist).”
Ejae showcased Korean identity to the world at the Academy Awards held last month by performing the song ‘Gold’ with dancers wearing Hanbok. Recalling that moment, he said, “It was a moment I was incredibly proud of as a Korean to be able to present our traditional music, Pansori, at such an event,” and added, “I cried a lot during rehearsals.”
