- My Korean husband really hates cilantro

This is a question often asked by foreigners who wonder why Koreans can handle strong spices by eating them raw, yet are completely overwhelmed by just a few pieces of cilantro"
"Depending on one’s genes, the smell of cilantro can vary from person to person. Due to genetic factors, some people perceive a foul odor in cilantro. To put it bluntly, first-time tasters may experience a repulsive sensation, as if they had put soap, detergent[9], shampoo, or cosmetics in their mouths, due to its distinctive sour, artificial smell that lingers in the mouth like burning plastic. It can even resemble the smell of urine. However, there are also people who enjoy this sensation. To them, the smell of cilantro is so strong that it simply does not come across as the aroma of a natural food.
In the West as well, some people consistently describe it as smelling like soap or detergent and dislike it; the scientific mechanism behind this was partially elucidated by a 2012 study. The study concluded that a gene named OR6A2 causes a specific mutation in olfactory receptors, and people with this mutation are more likely to perceive the smell of cilantro as unpleasant odors such as detergent, soap, or stink bugs. Simply put, the mechanism is similar to that of cucumbers."
So it was all because of our genes
