The production team of “Perfect Crown” has addressed the controversy over historical distortion.
The production team of the MBC Saturday-Sunday drama “Perfect Crown” (written by Yu Ji-won, directed by Park Jun-hwa and Bae Hwa-young, planned by Kang Dae-sun, produced by MBC and Kakao Entertainment) issued an apology on the 16th through the official website, stating, “We sincerely apologize to all who have watched the drama with affection for causing concern over issues related to world-building and historical accuracy.”
The production team added, “We have taken to heart the viewers’ criticism that the scene depicting the king wearing a ‘Guryumyeonryugwan’ and subjects chanting ‘Cheonse’ during the coronation ceremony undermines Korea’s sovereign status.” They explained, “This issue arose because the production team failed to carefully examine how Joseon’s protocols evolved throughout history.”
They acknowledged, “‘Perfect Crown’ is both a romance and an alternate history drama. While the intersection of the fictional world and real historical contexts required careful and in-depth consideration, we lacked the effort to refine the world-building and scrutinize details more thoroughly.”
Additionally, they stated, “We humbly accept the viewers’ criticism and will promptly correct the audio and subtitles of the relevant scenes in future rebroadcasts, VOD, and OTT services. We once again deeply apologize for any inconvenience caused.”
Finally, they added, “Moving forward, the production team will strive to create works that repay the trust of our viewers with a greater sense of responsibility.”
In Episode 11, which aired on the 15th, controversy erupted over scenes depicting the emperor (king) of an independent nation wearing a ‘Guryumyeonryugwan’—a crown symbolizing a vassal lord—rather than the ‘Sibiilryugwan’ with 12 strands of jewels, and subjects chanting ‘Cheonse’ (used when a vassal state is subordinate to an empire) instead of ‘Manse’ (the symbol of an independent nation). This sparked debates over historical distortion and the Northeast Project.
As the controversy escalated, the rebroadcast of Episode 11 on the afternoon of the 16th omitted the chanting of “Cheonse,” drawing attention.
The following is the full statement from the production team.
“We are the production team of ‘Perfect Crown.’ We sincerely apologize to all who have watched the drama with affection for causing concern over issues related to world-building and historical accuracy.

1. The government must stop this before it becomes a national embarrassment
2. Scrap this show, remove it from OTT
3. Cancel this show
4. Showing this trash drama overseas.... damn🤬🤬
5. They need to scrap the whole thing. Seriously trash
6. I hate that this drama is being shown overseas...
7. That was honestly the worst drama ever... To be honest, I liked all the actors, so I'm disappointed they chose something like this. The writer and director, not to mention the network, are beyond the pale
8. Remove it from OTT. The Chinese kids already started watching it, f*ckㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
9. Remove it from OTT, also, reveal to us who invested in this
10. This is the worst drama in history
[theqoo] IU SPOILING THE PLOT TWIST OF 'PERFECT CROWN'
IU: I haven't seen the final version either, I've only seen the edited version!
1. Honestly... I'm really disappointed that she decided to act in it just after reading this script
Part 1 moves fast, Part 2 is way more fun, but Part 3 is even more fun. Then Part 4 is a total blast, it's full of little laughs, sweet moments, and heartwarming fun, and the ending is daebak.
Part 5 is fun too, but I was starting to think it was dragging a bit, then Part 6 hit me like, "Okay, this is it." I'll stop here."
They did manage to get the ratings, so I guess that counts as a success

2. She looks so empty-brained
3. Forget her image, this show just revealed her acting skills...
4. I feel like the "Cheonse Cheonse" image will just be stuck to her nowㅋㅋㅋㅋ
5. Now that she knows about the controversy, she should at least apologize. Del Luna's plagiarism scandal and WLGYT removing the 4.3 rating... I’m a fan of IU, but I’m disappointed in this drama too.
6. Nothing in her brain
7. Everything IU does gets criticized because of the script, but I don't get why people keep saying she has a good eye for projects. Is it because she's so self-absorbed that she goes around defending herself by telling people to stop criticizing the drama's script and direction, and even the actors?
8. IU reads a lot of books and writes good lyrics and good book reviews but who'd knew she'd be this bad at picking projectsㅠㅠ
9. Seriously, I really wish you'd think about your influence before taking on a project. You know full well that it's popular overseas, don't you?
10. I always thought that IU was someone smart but... seems like she's not...
[theqoo] 'PERFECT CROWN'S' LAST LINE IN THE LATEST EPISODE THAT MADE EVERYONE CONFUSED BECAUSE NOBODY COULD RELATE
"When did I ever say I wanted status?"
"I said it's sh*tty that I missed out on opportunities because of it."
She grew up like a princess as the daughter of a chaebol family that gets invited to royal events.
She's even the type to confidently demand more money and better things for herself than her older brother gets.
Even though she's an illegitimate child, she never acts intimidated around her brother or sister-in-law and says whatever she wants.
At the royal academy, she got secret special treatment from an upperclassman prince and lived just fine there too.
At a young age, she became the head of a company and even played celebrity, selling out all the clothes and accessories she wore.
So what exactly did she "miss out on" or fail to enjoy...?

1. Seriously, why is her character so unlikable? I don't even understand what her issues are to begin with
2. Why did IU pick this drama....
3. Her character is so unlikable
4. I guess she didn't analyze the script very deeply
5. ??? The female lead is honestly f*cking unlikable
6. What are you talking about? You said it was because of your status. Come on, really...
7. The female lead really has no charms
8. What a f*cked up character
9. The biggest question is why IU even picked this drama....
10. Actors, director, writer, everyone OUT
