She's the first member in AKB history to have her contract terminated

"We are deeply grateful for the extraordinary support we have received.

We would like to announce that our company has terminated the exclusive contract with Ai Hanada, who has been active as a member of AKB48, effective today, June 23, 2026.

We would also like to explain the circumstances leading up to this decision.

Since around December 2025, she has repeatedly been late for work citing poor health. As her agency, we have prioritized her well-being above all else and suspended her activities so that she could identify the cause of her condition and focus on receiving appropriate treatment.

The suspension of activities announced earlier was due to these circumstances.

During this process, a connection with a specific fan was discovered. Although she explained that she had met this fan only twice by chance, hearings with relevant parties revealed that she had in fact met this specific fan on multiple occasions.

Such connections with specific fans are acts that undermine member safety, fairness among members, and the trust of fans, and are strictly prohibited by AKB48.

Nevertheless, out of respect for the member’s wish to return to AKB48, we have repeatedly requested discussions regarding the specifics of her return; however, she has refused to engage in such discussions.
The member has claimed that management instructed her on her hairstyle, but naturally, upon confirmation with the responsible staff, they stated, “We absolutely do not issue such instructions.”

Furthermore, she has requested disciplinary action against the member who insulted her, as well as the reinstatement of the episode in question, which was removed from the platform. However, as these matters fall within the management’s discretion and cannot be addressed immediately, we have been unable to reach an agreement."

It sounds a bit awkward because it’s written in a formal, translated style, but people are saying that management made her shave her head, while management claims they obviously never asked her to do such a thing.

The member who shaved her head in the past did so of her own volition, it wasn’t something the company ordered her to do.

The reasons for the contract termination were frequent tardiness due to health issues, ongoing meetings with a specific fan, and lying.

Excerpts from a transcript of a video she uploaded:
"...During that discussion, I was asked questions like, “Aren’t you actually dating this fan?” along with other s****l questions. Even though I denied it, they didn’t believe me. After that, they brought up the story of how Minami Minegishi had once shaved her head and told me, “If you want to stay in AKB, shave your head and show us your sincerity.” Unable to make an immediate decision, I requested a three-week hiatus without giving an answer on whether I would cut my hair.

While I was taking a break because my health had deteriorated, I was suddenly notified that my hiatus had been changed to indefinite. Furthermore, there was an incident that gave me the impression that “if things continue like this, I won’t be able to continue my activities with AKB. If I don’t cut my hair, I’ll be forced out.” It was very painful to give up the hair I had cherished for so long, but because I wanted so badly to continue my activities with AKB, I decided to cut my hair. As you can see, my hair is now cut short.
Regarding this incident, first and foremost, I deeply regret the reckless actions I took. I sincerely apologize. (...)

People contacted me and made frightening remarks, saying, “If you go public with your bald head, your contract could be terminated or you could be forced to pay damages.” Many people around me also tried to talk me out of it. I spoke with Mion Mukai, whom I deeply respect; while she said the management was being too cruel, she repeatedly encouraged me, saying that Mei Mei shouldn’t become a victim. Of course, I am the one who is most afraid of appearing in public with this bald head.

However, I don’t want any other girl in AKB to feel pressured into thinking, “I have no choice but to shave my head.” Furthermore, because I want to convey my honest feelings to all of you right now, I’ve decided to broadcast my experience exactly as it happened, no matter what the consequences may be.
For nearly two years, working alongside the members I truly love and my precious fans has been a huge source of motivation every day. I was able to become the idol I’d always dreamed of, and every day was fun, I was truly happy. I was so happy to have precious friends and family who shared in all of this joy with me. Before joining, I said, “I just want to be an idol,” but now..."
