The title sounds dramatic, but I really feel like we've reached post-modernism with Kpop, but also pop in general.
The market is too saturated, and I feel like we're just seeing a bunch of influencers rather than artists.Yes, kpop was never about the art, but even in factory-produced groups, there should be a certain artistic direction. There used to be uniqueness because it wasn't fast-paced or saturated. And companies seemed to put more care into the craft than just punching out tiktok viral moments.
Come to think of it, I don't even think legendary groups from the past (aside from a few) would hit as big as they did if they debuted today. Groups like T-ara, Sistar, Mamamoo, were iconic and distinct in the past, but given how saturated the market is now, I doubt they can stand a chance. And don't get me started with the overfixation on "looks" and "vibes", that's why such legendary groups will not survive a day today.
Looks and vibes don't cut it if there's no clear artistry and branding. I feel like the market has taken a turn because of the brainrot of society.
On the other hands, rookies from today are just following the same formula: looking at what's ALREADY trending in Korea and in the West and replicating it. There's no artistry, not creativity, nothing to be impressed about.
I sometimes go on sites like theqoo and pann, but even there, nobody seems excited about Kpop anymore, it's just a whole lot of...bland?
I really need Korea to produce another next big act, because it's getting BORING
