Born the son of a miner in Jeongseon, Gangwon Province, actor Wonbin achieved success literally starting from scratch. After graduating from a technical high school in Chuncheon and working at an auto repair shop, he impulsively decided to pursue a dream of becoming an actor. It is said that the reason this young man from the countryside resolved to become an actor was out of a desire to help his parents, who had endured a lifetime of hardship.

Wonbin decided to become an actor after watching television by chance and thinking, "It looks like I could make money easily if I became a celebrity." He subsequently moved to Seoul with no money, delivering newspapers and doing manual labor while trying to break into the entertainment industry.
