[theqoo] HA YOUNG, TEARFUL APOLOGY FOLLOWING GREAT-GRANDFATHER'S PRO-JAPANESE TIES... POSSIBLE DEPARTURE FROM SBS ''THE LONG SHOT TRIAL'

Actress Ha Young continues filming her upcoming project amid controversy over her great-grandfather’s pro-Japanese activities. As the broadcasting and advertising industries move to distance themselves from her, the network preparing to air the drama has been placed in a difficult position due to the enormous sunk costs involved.

According to MyDaily on August 16, Ha Young is currently filming SBS’s upcoming drama The Long Shot Trial, which is scheduled to premiere in February next year. On August 13, Ha Young reportedly broke down in tears during filming, causing production to be temporarily halted. On August 11, her birthday, a cake celebration that had originally been planned on set was also reportedly canceled shortly after the controversy erupted.

SBS is reportedly reluctant to replace Ha Young or have her leave the drama. The network stated, “A significant portion of filming has already been completed. We are aware of the situation and are closely monitoring how it develops.” With around 90% of filming already completed and production expected to wrap up within three weeks at the earliest, replacing the lead would be difficult given the tens of billions of won already invested in production.

However, the drama’s premiere date and subject matter could become major factors. It is scheduled to air in February, close to March 1st Independence Movement Day, and is a remake of a Japanese drama, making the controversy surrounding its lead actress being a descendant of a “pro-Japanese collaborator” particularly problematic.

Ha Young’s great-grandfather, Ahn Sang-ho, worked as a doctor during the Japanese colonial period and has been accused of having a pro-Japanese past. The controversy intensified after a 1983 book, A Study of Court Customs of the Joseon Dynasty, stated that Ahn Sang-ho’s wife was the daughter of a Japanese army general who was stationed at the Japanese Government-General of Korea at the time.

The industry has been moving quickly to distance itself from Ha Young. Commercial videos for home appliance and fashion brands featuring Ha Young have been made private. Episodes of KBS 2TV’s Problem Child in House, in which Ha Young had previously spoken proudly about her great-grandfather, have been removed from streaming services. Content Ha Young filmed to promote her Netflix series Our Sticky Love has also been left in limbo, with its release now uncertain.
