[theqoo] 'SCHOOL VIOLENCE ACCUSATIONS' JO BYEONG-KYU, CHALLENGES HIMSELF IN 'OPERA' MUSICAL

According to the production team of the musical Opera on the 11th, Jo Byeong-kyu will appear in the show, which runs from October 1 to October 18 at Ewha Womans University’s Samsung Hall.

Opera is an original musical centered on three historical figures, Louis XIV (a symbol of the French absolute monarchy), playwright Molière, and composer Jean-Baptiste Lully. It portrays the rifts that emerge when art intersects with power through the relationships between these three men. Jo Byeong-kyu has been double-cast alongside Moon Tae-yu in the role of Louis XIV, a character symbolizing power and order. This marks Jo Byeong-kyu’s debut in a musical.

In 2021, an individual identified as "A" posted on social media claiming to have been a victim of school bullying by Jo Byeong-kyu during their time studying abroad in New Zealand.

Although Jo Byeong-kyu’s side dismissed the allegations as "false" and signaled their intent to take strong legal action, further accusations continued to emerge. Ultimately, Jo stepped down from the KBS variety show Comeback Home and declined the lead role in the upcoming tvN drama Inspector Joy.

Last November, Jo filed a lawsuit seeking substantial damages against "A," the individual who had raised the school bullying allegations, but he lost the case. Jo’s side had previously claimed that "A" defamed him by posting false statements, asserting that he suffered financial losses totaling 4 billion won due to the cancellation of appearances in advertisements, films, and dramas.

Jo Byeong-kyu appealed the ruling, and the appellate hearing is scheduled for this coming August. Unlike the initial trial, this appeal excludes Jo’s former agency, HB Entertainment, from the list of appellants, and the claimed damages have been reduced from approximately 4 billion won to around 900 million won.

The criminal case in which Jo Byeong-kyu sued "A" for defamation concluded with a decision not to refer the case to the prosecution.
