The independence activist Hong Jae-seol once set fire to the home of pro-Japanese collaborator Lee Wan-yong (T/N: the person who allegedly had ties with Ha Young's great grandfather). His son, Hong Jong-wook, was also arrested after taking the lead in the March 1st Movement.

After his release, he was branded a “ringleader,” which made it difficult for him to earn a living, and he eventually died in poverty.

His grandson recalled:

“When I was young, I wondered why my grandfather lived like a wreck and why he didn’t work. I didn’t even know that he had been an independence activist.”

He added:

“The family fell apart because of his involvement in the independence movement.”

One of her relatives reportedly lived as a wage worker in her 80s, cleaning houses and earning just over 1 million won a month (~$705 USD).

Kim Sang-deok, who led the February 8th Declaration of Independence and later spearheaded the effort to purge pro-Japanese collaborators after liberation, served as chairman of the Special Committee for Investigation of Anti-National Activities.

His son is said to have survived by delivering milk and newspapers.

Recently, writings from the past by the father of a celebrity who is a descendant of a pro-Japanese collaborator have become controversial.

Could it be that, for her, the passage of time was not a catalyst for remorse, but an accomplice that helped bury her sense of guilt?

But time can never truly be on the side of injustice.

“If you fight for independence, three generations will suffer. If you collaborate with Japan, three generations will prosper.”

We must make sure that this heartbreaking “rule of thumb” ultimately becomes the wrong answer.
