"GenZ who stopped saying "hello"... Goes silent when they answer the phone"

The basic phone greeting "Hello" is disappearing among Generation Z. 

When a call comes in from an unknown number, they answer it and remain silent until the other person speaks first. As they are accustomed to text messages and instant messengers and find phone calls burdensome, coupled with the recent rise in AI-powered voice phishing, the way the younger generation communicates appears to be changing. 

Recently, foreign media outlets such as The New York Times (NYT) and The Guardian reported that a new phone culture is spreading among the younger generation where they do not greet the other person first when answering the phone. 

Sophia Perez (22), a resident of New York, said in an interview with The New York Times, "When a call comes in from an unknown number, I answer the phone but don't say anything," adding, "I wait until the other person speaks first."

1. At this point, just don't pick up the phone tsk tsk 

2. I’ve heard that people are using AI to clone voices these days, so I don’t say "Hello" when answering unknown numbers until the caller speaks first. Plus, I get so many spam calls lately that it’s faster to just listen to the main point and hang up if it’s not relevant

3. It's because scams have become so prevalent 

4. Why is everyone giving them such a hard time? People here have said that because of voice phishing, you shouldn't speak first when answering a call from an unknown number

5. I feel like it's more a lack of manners

6. I'm a 96'er, but I know there are a lot of instances where we receive ads, so instead, I just don't pick up the phone at all 

7. But it's only mannerly for the person calling to say hello first...

8. I need to do this because of all the voice phishing 

9. Then just don't answer the phone at all. What's the point of answering if you're not gonna say anything?

10. It's only a "hello" what can they steal from that?
