I've been noticing this lately—every third-gen boy group fandom seems to have the same conflict with K-fans for the exact same reason: when an idol’s girlfriend posts something, fans see it as showing off and dropping obvious hints that they’re dating. Even subtle codes still get hated on hard. If they can’t even drop hints on Instagram, imagine how bad it gets when they interact in front of the camera. There’s this belief among Chinese fans that doing a dance challenge together actually proves the dating rumor is fake—like, if they’re doing a challenge with another idol, they’re definitely NOT dating. Seeing how massive the backlash is whenever idols show off their relationships, I’m pretty sure most idols are more aware and choose to protect their fans’ feelings and keep the peace. Shippers might see a dance challenge as a “yay my ship!!” moment, but actually it just means your ship isn’t real or it’s purely for show/delusional.
