I sincerely apologize to everyone who felt disappointed or uncomfortable because of the remarks I made regarding the Asian Games.
Representing South Korea at the Asian Games itself was incredibly meaningful to me, and as an athlete, I naturally gave my best with the goal of winning and earning a gold medal. In that process, what I meant was that the military service benefit was simply one of several motivations I had to strive for an even better result, but unfortunately, that meaning was conveyed incorrectly.
Regardless of what my intention was, I acknowledge that many people felt uncomfortable because of my words, and that I made it appear as though I was taking the significance of winning a gold medal as a member of the national team lightly. That was clearly my mistake.
I do not believe that the gold medal was something that was simply given to us or taken for granted. I believe it was an achievement made possible by the efforts and support of many people.
I also want to make it clear that I never intended to belittle or mock the hard work of those who are currently fulfilling their mandatory military service, or of everyone who will have to fulfill that duty in the future.
I sincerely apologize to everyone who was hurt or disappointed by my thoughtless remarks. From now on, I will repay your support not only through my words, but by showing greater responsibility and better performances on the field.
I am truly sorry.
