[Anchor]

A group of individuals who attempted to extort money by claiming that the captain of the national football team, Son Heungmin, had fathered a child, appeared in public today.

They were brought to court for a pretrial detention hearing.

Police confirmed that the woman who blackmailed Son Heungmin had indeed undergone an abortion.

Here's an exclusive report by reporter Kwon Kyung-moon.

Two escort vehicles arrive in succession, and a woman and a man appear at the courthouse one after another.

They are the suspects who claimed the woman was pregnant with footballer Son Heungmin’s child and demanded money, now appearing for their detention warrant hearing.

The woman, reportedly a model industry worker, is said to have sent Son an ultrasound image of a baby in June of last year and received around 300 million KRW (220,000 USD).

The man is accused of attempting to extort an additional 70 million KRW (50,000 USD), but was unsuccessful.

According to Channel A’s investigation, police confirmed through hospital records that the woman had a history of undergoing an abortion.

It is reported that the ultrasound image does indeed belong to her.

However, whether the child was actually Son Heungmin’s has not been confirmed.

After an hour-long warrant review, the woman denied the charges of blackmail to reporters.

[Ms. Yang / In her 20s]

“<Do you admit to the charges?> … <Did you conspire to blackmail?> No.”

About 40 minutes later, the man said he was sorry.

[Mr. Yong / In his 40s]

“<Do you have anything to say to Son Heungmin?> I’m sorry.”

Police say that if the threats and demands for money were indeed made, the crime of blackmail is established regardless of whether the woman was actually pregnant with Son Heungmin’s child, and they are continuing their investigation.
