An MBC representative stated, “We fully sympathize with the bereaved family’s position, but we cannot forcibly tell a specific weathercaster, ‘You’re the perpetrator, so step down.’ Even encouraging a voluntary resignation is a very sensitive issue at the company level. We will need to discuss further on what actions to take.”
They continued, “We have not yet received the official report from the Ministry of Employment and Labor regarding the results of the special labor inspection. The press release was prepared in a rush because the news article came out first. Once the official report arrives, we will thoroughly review it and consider appropriate follow-up measures.”
Previously, on the 19th, MBC reported the results of the special labor inspection by the Ministry of Employment and Labor on its program News Desk, stating, “We take seriously the finding that there was workplace harassment against Oh Yoanna.” The network also announced plans for follow-up measures including the appointment of a cooperation and coexistence officer, the introduction of a third-party reporting system, and legal review of freelancers’ employment status. During the broadcast, anchor Cho Hyun-yong bowed his head and said, “We apologize to the bereaved family.” MBC also issued a separate statement saying, “Improving organizational culture and preventing recurrence will be our top management priorities.”
