[PC stories/KPOP takes] SOMI'S EXTRA - IS THE BLACKLABEL SOBOTAGING SOMI'S CAREER?

EXTRA is by far Somi's most solid effort and release as a soloist IMO, and yet I can't help but feel as though TBL isn't pushing it they should as there have been no Melon or SNS adds and hardly any commercial push whatsoever. A great deal of people didn't even know she'd dropped a single. A stark contrast to MEOVV and ADP'S rollouts.

It's worth noting that it's just a digital single meant to be a pre-release for her upcoming album CHAOS, which title track will be a song called Exquisite, but there's no set date for its release as of yet...

I feel that out of so many idols in the industry, and irrespective of how one might feel about her or her music, Somi genuinely has the feel and overall look of a proper pop superstar a la Britney Spears, Miley Cyrus, Dua Lipa or what have you; yet TBL never builds on the momentum of her releases and merely shelves her for months on end thereafter, which I suppose is typical TEDDY/YG but as a soloist this simply isn't sustainable.

Granted, she does have a makeup brand of her own, Glyf, has a global ambassadorship with PRADA as one of the faces of their fine jewellery line, with The North Face's The White Label, d'Alba cosmetics, she's a curator for fashion retailer REVOLVE and has become their first ever global ambassador, had an ambassadorship for Lacoste, Cosrx, LV, Jacquemus, Buccelati, Lululemon etc... She's obviously not on the verge of being destitute by any means, but this specific choice of supposed "exclusivity based marketing" feels completely antiquated and frankly inadequate for her as a soloist with great general public recognition.

I feel as though she could so easily reach mainstream legacy success in the West were she to be given the right push and consistent effort to that effect. What makes it especially frustrating is the fact that TBL and TEDDY have displayed for the past couple of months how capable they can be — assuming they can be bothered to that is — with MEOVV and ADP, so just what is the hold up with Somi? If they truly were hellbent on maintaining this marketing ploy and rollout for her, then why not diversify her pool of gigs? I could easily picture her starring in a Netflix flick/show, or have a small role in an HBO series a la Euphoria, it's not like they don't have the connections. I just don't get it... It's gotten to a degree such that it practically feels like sabotage.

On another note, I'm curious as to how most of you feel about EXTRA. Personally, I loved it. This mellow funk, with synth wave and city pop influence is truly doing wonders for her. The concept, lyricism and visuals are all beautifully executed.
